Best Distillery

It’s easy to get caught up in the elegant designs of Montgomery Distillery’s bottles, but everyone knows it’s what’s inside that counts. Owners Jenny and Ryan Montgomery created Whyte Laydie Gin and Quicksilver Vodka after studying centuries-old distilling techniques in Scotland, then getting a certification in herbal studies in Montana. Last year, the couple, along with head distiller Chad Larrabee, unveiled their first batches of Montgomery Single Malt and Sudden Wisdom Rye, all of which are made with wheat and rye from a farm in Heath, Montana, run by Ryan’s parents. Sipping on these old-world recipes made with Montana ingredients—straight, or mixed in cocktails—makes it plenty clear why the distillery gives so much attention to those pretty bottles: They have to compete with the contents.
